Virtuality in the (Visual) Text: Romanino's Nativity with Saints

Romanino's Nativity creates a secondary virtuality -- a virtuality in addition to its naturalistic depiction of physical appearance -- by implying that saints Alessandro of Brescia, Jerome, and others who appear on separate panels in some way inhabit the same virtual space -- a space of ideas.

Equally common, many works in naturalistic styles present -- one cannot say represent -- an impossible space and place.
