Virtuality in the (Visual) Text: The Ansidei Madonna

Raphael. The Madonna and Child with Saint John the Baptist and Saint Nicholas of Bari, c. 1505.

As this altarpiece makes clear, visual texts often create images of virtual communities within virtual spaces -- virtual here because one of the figures, Saint Nicholas of Bari, lived half a millennium after the others with whom he shares this picture space. Here intellectual (or ideological) relationships predominate over physical ones.
