Baltimore & Ohio 4-6-0 Camelback (1869)

The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad's Mt. Clare shops built this camelback, which weighs 90.700 pounds. Ross Winans designed locomotives with extra-wide fireboxes to burn anthracite coal that left no room for the engineer behind, so he placed the cab and controls in the middle of the engine. “The No. 305 was designed by J. C. Davis, Master of Machinery, and built . . . in 1869. It was used for passenger service over the 17-mile grade west of Cumberland” — museum label. The restored engine is in the collection of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum, Baltimore, Maryland.
