Differential movement relies partly on the temporal strategy coined by Gayatri Spivak as 'strategic essentialism': a method of claiming or making one group on the basis of one part of people's identity (e.g. 'women'). Strategic essentialism, in following the classic displacement strategy of poststructuralism, recognises that the question should be how and where temporal essentialism is a useful subversive act. It is important to recognise the temporal aspect of this method without falling into actual 'generalised' essentialism, which would in the long run deny any internal differences in a group.
