The idea of 'shifting identities' in relation to the new media and technologies is taken up by Elizabeth Lawley in her argument that developments in these new technologies are in a dialectic relationship with constructions of identity and gender. The new media not only shape these social constructions and subject positions, but at the same time its users shape the technological form and content within a certain context. Her argument coincides here with the logic of remediation. Identities therefore remain in constant state of shifting, which in fact makes it possible for taking up temporally subversive positions through the uses of the new communication technologies.
