In quoting an author, the quoted author and the text he is author of is still separate from the main text. The link (if it can be called one) is the quotation itself; the quotation is more of a summary of the relevant than a tie that binds the two texts. In this way, the text is still an island but the land just got bigger by reclamation. The linking is actually done in our head.
