She remembered that Sr. Alice, her 6th grade French teacher, had told them that
camphor could ward off colds.
She kept pieces of camphor in the corners of her classroom that the kids would
smell every time they went to the board to conjugate a verb.
There was a picture of Jesus above this blackboard.
It was the kind whose eyes would follow you around the room. Sr. Alice said that
this meant that Jesus was watching you even if her back was turned.
She felt that such moving eyes were one of the hallmarks of high art.
