This, of course, is because the culture and the machines are almost completely interwoven, each affecting the other. Quite recently, for example, an entire unique culture grew out of user groups of CB radios. The existence of the radios allowed this culture to be possible, and its strengths and weaknesses helped shape the way people interacted with each other, and thus the culture. A similar case can be made about IRC chatrooms.
