Hypertextual Subjectivity

Patrick Nagle, English 65, The Cyborg Self, Brown University (Fall 2006)

Hypertext is another field of connections between STS and literary theory. The way that hypertext formulates human identity is similar to the way that virtual environments and computer programs shape children's vision of consciousness. In this way, hypertext serves as a model for a new form of human subjectivity that is fluid and cycling, as opposed to a Modernist subjectivity that is coherent and stable, much like hypertext's predecessor, print technology.
