Hypertext and other forms of electronic writing have been constructed and advertised ad nauseum with travel metaphors.

In political history, travel is linked to important missions, tours of duty, explorations and colonialism. Travel as such has been for men only, while women have stayed at home.

Maybe this is why the notion of electronic travel, already a hackneyed metaphor for hypertext, appeals so strongly to women. The possibilities of exploring hypertext and "surfing the web" tempt women out of the confined space of their own homes.

And, when they "travel" through hypertextual electronic worlds, women don't need a male escort...
