By providing more specific information in the link descriptions an author lets readers know in advance what they'll find at the end of a link, the author. This information makes an effective preview function. In other words, even when the hypertext environment has built-in navigational devices, such as link menus, authors can use them effectively or ineffectively, well or badly. The software never does everything -- you still have to write.
