In oral cultures, as Walter Ong has noted, thinking is heavily patterned so as to facilitate memorization. Print cultures need not rely so much upon memory, since writing is static and readers can always refer back to it. Humans can only carry four to seven discrete chunks of information in short-term memory at any given time. To maintain the story in the minds of the listeners, oral poets must continually repeat these formulas to the point of redundancy.
