Brook Avenue

I'm white and middle class, but then who isn't? No one I know. Being white and middle class, it's like having two eyes and two legs, it's normal. I'm living in the part ofthe country where most people fly over on the way to somewhere else. The most distinctive feature of the landscape is the wide river that runs through it and divides the country in at least two. It's a river of silence. What the river looks like depends on where you're standing. I was born on one side, where silence is golden, where answering "How are you?" by saying anything other than "Fine!" is as unthinkable as screaming: "Fire!" in a crowded theatre. Somehow I've crossed over to the side of the river where silence equals death.
