Feminist theory, drawing also upon psycho-analytic theory, could argue that the desire for immediacy as posed by Bolter and Grusin in Remediation is strongly related to a notion of traditional Western masculine subjectivity that seeks for transcendence, or as cyberpunk author William Gibson put it, to 'leave the meat behind'. The appeal to authenticity of experience is socially constructed.
The concept of hypermediacy might actually more interesting to feminist thought because it embeds a more 'deviant' way of looking, endowing a multiplicity of viewpoints. This concept then could potentially be integrated with Chela Sandoval's concept of mestiza subjectivity. But the question then becomes, cutting back to Ani DiFranco, how to hold the tool right? Is this project for instance hypermediate?
