I am this infant who has not yet mastered the upright posture and who while supported by either another person or some prosthetic devise will, upon seeing myself in the mirror, jubilantly assume the upright position.

I thus found in the mirror image "already there," a mastery that I will have actually learnt only later. The jubilation, the enthusiasm, is tied to the temporal dialectic by which I appeared already to be what I will only later become.
