Postcolonial theorist Homi Bhabha appropriates the concept of hybridity from Michael Bakhtin, who refers to a 'hybrid utterance' as on in which multiple linguistic registers or various different voices coexist (multivocality). Bhabha argues that the postcolonial subject is always split because of its ambivalent relationship to the dominant culture. This idea of the hybrid subject is similar to the idea of the mestiza as coined by Chicana theorist Gloria Anzaldùa, although Bhabha only focuses on the axis of ethnicity and fails to take the axes of gender, sexuality and class into account.
