The Wait

She gave her mother's name to the haughty receptionist. They sat down to wait. She hoped her mother wouldn't have to go to the bathroom until after her appointment. If the receptionist called her name while she was in the bathroom, it would make her mother nervous, and she'd move even more slowly. This in turn would make the receptionist impatient, and call someone else. Then they would have to wait even longer.

She decided to read.
