"A cyborg is a cybernetic organism," begins Haraway, "a hybrid of machine and organism, a creature of social reality as well as a creature of fiction."

            "Sounds like a good working definition to me," the Librarian says. "Fido the cyborg seems to believe that he is still a thinking dog, and he seems to remember his past. But very few people believe that dogs can actually think the way humans do. Ng defends his practice of factory-produced pups vehemently:"

            "We save abandoned dogs from certain extinction and send them to what amounts to Dog Heaven."

            "Do they remember stuff?" Y.T. says.

            "To the extent that they can remember anything," Ng says. "We don't have a way of erasing memories."

            "Although both Ng and Fido are cyborgs, clearly one has the higher developed intellect and language capabilities," begins the Librarian. "Ng is controlling Fido as if he were a mindless machine, even to the extent that he invents the Dog Heaven for him."

            "The machine is not an it to be animated, worshipped, and dominated," Haraway says. "The machine is us, our processes, an aspect of our embodiment. We can be responsible for machines; they do not dominate or threaten us."

            "In other words," the Librarian replies, "all humans are cyborgs, and rather than trying to maintain diametrically opposed relationships with these so-called machines, humans should instead embrace them as part of themselves."

            "Yes."

            "Well, then why can't Y.T. have her dog back?"
