Beowulf, ll. 459-472

Your father stirred up the greatest of feuds:
he struck down Heatholaf of the Wylfings
in close combat; fearing reprisal,
the Weders dare not grant him asylum.
Therefore, he sought the South-Danes,
the proud Scyldings, over rought seas.
I had just come to the Danish throne
and in my youth held a large kingdom
and vast wealth. Heorogar,
my eldest brother, son of Healfdene,
had just died. He was better than I!
I settled the feud as swiftly as I could,
sent old treasures over mountainous waves
to the Wylfings. Your father swore me allegiance.
