Disorientation takes two forms, both of which involve the reader not knowing what to do. We experience the first form of disorientation when we do not understand material we read. Readers of philosophical texts, literary theory, and advanced scientific texts frequently have this kind of experience, which is not necessarily harmful or even unenjoyable. The second kind of disorientation results from writing, poor organization, and inadequate system design.
