The term Anglo-Saxon describes members of Germanic tribes (Angles, Saxons and Jutes) who invaded England during the fifth and sixth centuries and who were still there at the time of the Norman Conquest in 1066. Knowledge of their runic alphabet was confined to rune-masters, who used their skill only for special and limited purposes: marks of ownership, commemorative inscriptions, and so on.
