Hold Together

"The story is about two lovers in a time of trial. It goes like this:"

She loved him. He loved her. She said that she would always love him. He said that he would protect her, no matter what happened. They intended to be wed before very long. He was sent far away. She had to spend most of her time with her ailing mother. When they saw one another, they often quarreled. They were afraid of something that hovered over them namelessly. Neither of them wished to speak of it. She asked him what had become of them; he didn't know. He came home with a long cut across his face. She became distant. He caught her with another man. He took to drinking. They never lost hope. They lived together long and happily. They died alone.
