it was as if Betty had been refined into nonexistance or wisped away like so much steam. The veil of her delicate, taciturn, diaphonous presence was lifted
from between Anita and me. Everything wonderful about Betty had somehow passed in through our pores and purified us, that we could see in each other everything we had or hadn't always needed.
