User-Defined Space

Jeff Pack '99, Brown University (English 112, 1996)

Though a digital space may be designed for a specific purpose, its ultimate definition depends on what users actually use it for. If a science newsgroup becomes overrun by UFO theorists, then that space has changed (probably into a flame-war. Whether that's a good thing depends on who you ask, but it can't be denied that the nature of the space has been altered. In some spaces, design rests entirely in the hands of inhabitants. What's a MUD without users? (Answer: Zork.)
