"After eating, as usual, I sat around with Anita and her family, played games, and watched TV. In that family, there is a inveterate tradition to have "family time" after dinner and it transpires uneventfully night after night. Anita's parents love to play games: chess and Scrabble, especially.
"I used to join them as Betty's guest. I was always on her team or tacitly in her ward in some other way. That night, Betty was no longer around and I somehow felt welcomed as a surrogate member of the family."
