Hypertext: The Interface
The interface must be invisible. After all, the traditional novel's interface is practically non-existence; or rather, it is so simple and obvious to the literate being that it is not even considered. The reader of the traditional novel almost always follows an identical path: start with the first page, and continue reading until the novel is over. Of course, sometimes the reader may decide to return to a certain passage or section of a novel if s/he so chooses, but this is generally a completely voluntary decision.
